Glove Box keys have a way of disappearing or breaking off in the lock, especially when the glove box contains pertinent information like vehicle registration and insurance documentation. Sometimes, the actual lock no longer works, particularly if the vehicle is older and from usage will need to be replaced. In older vehicles, the glove box key may also fit the trunk key, unless this lock had been changed. You may actually have not only a glove box lock repair, but also a trunk lock that will require attention as well.
A locked glove box is not difficult for a skilled locksmith whom has the right tools, the training and a replacement lock. They specialize in glove box lock repair as one the many services they offer and are quite adapt at extracting broken keys, picking locks or drilling out the center of the lock if that is what will be required. Locksmiths do not have to remove the dash as some diy suggest doing. Also they do not spray WD40 into the lock, as it does not help and just adds to the problem. If you search the internet, you find all kinds of suggestions such as removing hinges. There is no need do try any of these yourself. Locksmiths will take care not to damage or scratch the glove box surrounding the lock, which could easily happen if you tried to drill out the box or have someone else do it.
Most Locksmiths will try the easiest route such as trying master keys if available, picking the lock, and making replacement keys which would all be cheaper to the vehicle owner. If that fails, they will drill the center of the lock out, replace with a new glove box lock and keys that are appropriate for the make and model of the vehicle. This installation does not take long. A locksmith will complete a glove box lock repair quickly, efficiently and cost is quite affordable.
